Explore the alternative proposed changes in detail
The Eastern Bus Corridor project will improve the reliability, capacity, accessibility and efficiency of Wellington's busiest bus route by upgrading bus stops and intersections to support growing passenger demand and higher-capacity buses.
In June 2026, Wellington City Council and Metlink consulted on proposed bus stop and intersection improvements along the Eastern Bus Corridor, from Miramar to the central city. WCC Councillors approved the majority of the recommended Eastern Bus Corridor changes at the Te Takere | Regulatory Processes Committee on 2 September 2026. The approved package included several amendments in response to community feedback, along with a number of additional Councillor-directed amendments.
Consultation feedback received in May-June 2026 showed support for improving bus reliability and capacity, alongside concerns about the accessibility impacts of some proposed bus stop changes. Following review of this feedback, alternative options have been identified for further consultation.
The following proposed changes were a result of public feedback, and are currently out for further public consultation:

- Moxham Avenue stops (near Raupo Street) 6218 and 7218: Bus stops to be relocated to the corner of Moxham Ave/Tapiri St and extended to accommodate longer or additional buses

Changes by different mode users:
-
Some walking distances may change where bus stops are proposed to be removed or relocated.
-
Nearby stops would continue to provide access to bus services, but some people may need to use a different stop than they do now.
-
The wider Eastern Bus Corridor improvements are intended to improve accessibility by making it easier for buses to pull up closer to the kerb and deploy ramps where needed.
-
Several alternative proposals would retain and extend stops that were previously proposed for removal, including Moxham Avenue near Goa Street, Rongotai Road, and Park Road near Brussels Street.
-
Some stops are still proposed to be removed or relocated, including Kupe Street, Moxham Avenue near Raupo Street, and Park Road stops 7234 and 6234.
-
Longer or extended stops would help accommodate additional or higher-capacity buses and reduce situations where buses queue, stop in traffic lanes, or leave passengers waiting because stop capacity is limited.
- The proposals aim to improve bus efficiency and reliability, reducing situations where buses queue or stop in general traffic lanes, which can affect other road users.
